Griot not by birthright, but spirit and skill, Tormenta Jobarteh hails from Germany, travelled the world, to finally settle, enchanted by West African culture, in Gambia. He spent 8 years immersing himself in the ancient art of griot storytelling, finally winning the honour of the name. He became one of the few outsiders to take on the griot tradition, dating back to the Mande empire, playing the kora while singing stories, serving as a backbone of community, a repository of oral history and an entertainer of young and old. Just like Jobarteh, weaving in strands of European and South American strands into his stories, as befits a globetrotting storyteller.
